The Jewish Agency

The Jewish Agency was an institution that stood to represent the interests of all Jewish people before the state of Israel was officially established.

After Israel had been established the Jewish Agency took a more secondary role in the organization and the planning of the welfare of immigrating Jews from the rest of the Diaspora to Israel.

Its aim was to take care of the Jewish Community resident in Palestine as the area was then known at the time. It was an administrative organization which also focused on the needs of Jews elsewhere and not strictly in Palestine. It was also directly responsible for the formation of the Haganah, a Jewish paramilitary organization which later became the foundation of the modern day Tsahal or Israeli Defense Forces.

This was the agency responsible at the time for the immigration of Jews into Palestine. In 1948 it later became the provisional government of Israel under the leader of the agency , David Ben Gurion. Prominent members of the Haganah include Yitzhak Rabin, Ariel Sharon and a number of other prominent Israeli’s.

Since the old agency had become the government of the state of Israel, a new Jewish Agency for Israel was established in order to cater to the economic and material needs of immigrants coming into the country.

One of the later moves made by this agency was to establish the Jewish Policy Planning Institute which in actual fact is a policy institute with its focus being all thing Israel and the protection of the Jewish way of life and the entire Jewish people at large.
